A fairy tale that began from a dream of being kind to the earth as well as to the body.
Make-up line LA BOUCHE ROUGE keeps pushing the barriers of possibility and tendency in the make-up world.
Lula JAPAN interviewed the founder of the brand, Nicolas Gerlier and asked him on the prospects of his brand, about sustainability, and a new definition of beauty.
LA BOUCHE ROUGE is obviously all about lipsticks but what is it about lipsticks in particular that drove you with that fascination and passion?
My priority today is to fight plastic pollution and to reverse it. And I am using the lipsticks as a symbol because you can find a lipstick every handbag.
I believe if you want to change and influence things, you need to find something simple that is in the daily life of everybody.
So when you want to create something new, it is a responsibility to engage people to change their habits and to further as key of message.
I think our generation are in charge to influence and further sustainability in the next 5 years.
So my lipsticks are in a way a symbol of a new beauty without plastic.
That is the idea behind my brand.
So you are trying to put that message into every person’s handbag.
Yes, a lipstick is a nice object to put in the table in a bar, or cafe. It is something you can show and apply in front of everybody.
It is almost like a manifesto right?
I also think it is important because you are eating and consuming it too.
There are microplastic in every lipstick nowadays.
Nowadays it is relatively easy to find cosmetic brands that trying to be more ecological and eco-friendly.
But in the case of LA BOUCHE ROUGE, you went all the way there and you made it completely without plastic.
There is no plastic even in the packaging.

Your brand has this unique take on art and fashion.
What was the turning point it made you to take your brand sustainable but also artistic and fashionable?
When I created this company I wanted to create something unique and nice.
And I wanted to place radicality and artistry as part of the brand.
In the commitment in the package we also have “Aspire to the Artistic Intellect” written on it.
A long time ago, I used to work for L’OREAL and I have learned a lot in there.
But I also wanted to reintroduce art as the heart of the company.
As the first step, I invited Ezra Petronio from Self-Service Magazine to create with me the design of the brand, or in the other words, the brand DNA.
And I am really proud and I have an infinite respect to what he has brought to the brand because it is something timeless and elegant.
I think that a maison is timeless, and it has to follow the time, and he helped me to nurture it.
How do you concept new colours?
Is there an inspiration?
We started our first collection with just 6 colours.
We wanted to do the opposite of the other brands.
Everybody is trying to create volume every time.
This mass production is part of the waste we have nowadays, and I think it is also part of the vision of the cosmetic industry today.
I want to reduce that and to stay focused and make something perfect.
Something completely opposite from the others.
And I feel the same when I am creating colours. I want to make passion.
