カルガリーを舞台に描く多様な人間像

パリを拠点に活動するアーティストデュオ Elsa & Johannaの個展「Beyond the Shadows」が、KANA KAWANISHI PHOTOGRAPHYにて7月5日（土）まで開催中。

1990年生まれのElsa Parraと1991年生まれのJohanna Benaïnousによって2014年に結成されたElsa & Johanna。
写真、映像、パフォーマンスといった分野を横断しながら、自身を被写体に、映画のような演出された世界を創作する。

近年ではヨーロッパ各地で個展を開催し、2020年にはフランス・アルル国際写真フェスティバルの新人賞ファイナリストにも選出された。

本展では、過去にカナダ・カルガリーで1ヶ月間滞在して制作されたシリーズを展示。

2人は現地でのリサーチからロケーションの選定、キャラクターの設定、スタイリング、出演に至るまですべてを自ら手がけ、セルフプロデュースでフィクション創作に没頭した。

かつてカウボーイの町として知られたカルガリーは、現在はテクノロジー、観光、資源開発の拠点として発展する都市。

野生のバッファローがかつて生息したというなだらかな丘陵地の奥に、急勾配のロッキー山脈がそびえるその場所は、2人に大きなインスピレーションを与えた。

彼らは老若男女を自在に行き来しながら、フィクションと現実の境界線が曖昧な、家庭的、親密、社会的、詩的な物語を紡ぎ上げている。

カルガリーの風景から生み落とされた、色とりどりの物語。
曖昧さを抱えた2人の意欲作が、鑑賞者の視線を静かに揺らす。
