スイスのアーティスト Mai-Thu Perretの個展「News From Nowhere」が、香港のSimon Lee Galleryにて、3月7日（土）まで開催中。

構成主義やダダイズム、バウハウスといった20世紀の前衛芸術運動に加え、フェミニズム、文学作品、工芸品など幅広い分野を研究し、学際的な実践を行うMai-Thu Perret。

自身の活動を「単一の声というよりはシンフォニーのようなもの」と表現する彼女は、造形芸術のみならず文章の執筆にも取り組んでおり、初のフィクション小説「The Crystal Frontier」では、東洋の宗教、オカルト、自然界への関心をもとに、個人および共同体のアイデンティティーに関する疑問を投げかけた。

今展では、伝統をポストモダンの美学と融合させたインスタレーションを通じ、コミュニティによるアイデンティティーに縛られた政治や社会への批判的な眼差しを提示。
タイトルの「News From Nowhere」は、アーツ・アンド・クラフツ運動で知られ、マルクス主義者でもあったWilliam Morrisが1890年に著した同名の小説に由来しており、PerretのプロジェクトはMorrisの著作と同じく、平等な人間関係を奨励する立場を取っている。

また、ダダの創設メンバーであるJean Arpを思わせるビオモーフィズム的な壁のレリーフや、イサム・ノグチへのオマージュである有機的なフォルムの彫刻など、さまざまな文化に対するPerretの好奇心と敬意がインスタレーションの随所に散りばめられた。

1つ1つのエレメントを丹念に紐解きたくなる、多元的な空間。
時代や地域的な枠組みを超越したユートピアに、足を踏み入れて。
