Stephen Shore は、1947年にニューヨークで誕生し、生活の中で目にした色彩を記録できるというカラー写真の機能に魅了されたフォトグラファー。

彼の作品は、出掛けた先で立ち寄ったレストランの食事や高速道路の看板、テキサスの街の埃っぽい脇道といったありふれた光景を、色彩や構図の妙で示唆に富んだ主題へと変容させる。

70sにアメリカ各地を旅しながら撮影したものを収めたShoreの作品集「Uncommon Places」は、写真というメディアが芸術としてみなされるべきものであることを証明し、カラー写真を志す若き写真家たちのバイブルとなった。
