抽象化されたポートレート作品が特徴の画家 Chantal Joffeについて、作家でありライターのOlivia Laingが記述したエッセイ「It Never Actually Is」が、ロンドンのギャラリー Victoria Miroのウェブサイトで公開中。

ロンドンを拠点に制作をしながら、現実世界のものを対象としたフィギュラティヴ・アートという枠組みの中で心理的および感情的な力に基づいたアプローチを行うChantal Joffe。

スケールやフォルムに歪みを持たせた流動性のある肖像画には、モデルや女優、母子、愛する人たち、文学作品のヒロインといったさまざまな人物が描かれており、本質を捉えるべく向けられた彼女特有の目線がその主題をよりリアルに表現している。

現在公開されている「It Never Actually Is」は、2018年の2月に作家のOlivia LaingがChantalのスタジオを訪れ、自身のポートレートを描いてもらっている間、彼女について書き記したもの。

Chantalに魅了され、すぐに心を開くことができたというOliviaのエッセイには、同時に互いを探り合うという試みを通じて深めていった絵画やChantal自身の描写、また、スタジオでの心温まるひと時が詰め込まれている。
