ロマン主義と日本文化が織り成す絵画

ドイツ・ベルリンを拠点に活動するアーティスト Tom Anholtの日本初となる個展「Distant Islands」が、BLUM Tokyoにて6月14日（土）まで開催中。

美術史の文脈やアレゴリーを通じて、センチメンタルな情景を描き出すTom Anholt。

イギリス・バースに生まれた彼は、ロンドンのチェルシー・カレッジ・オブ・アーツで学士号を取得後、スウェーデンの国立美術工芸大学コンストファック大学を卒業した。

現在は世界各地で個展やグループ展を開催し、その作品はデンマークのDBCコレクションやカナダのMajudiaコレクション、中国のM WOODSなど、パブリックコレクションに収蔵されている。

本展では、ドイツのロマン主義画家 Caspar David Friedrichの構図を参照した作品が数点登場する。

彼の絵画では鑑賞者の代理として人物像が用いられており、画中の人物は観る側であると同時に観られる側にもなり得るように構成されている。
こうした表現は、文化の観客であると同時に公共空間における観察対象でもあるという私たち自身の二重性を浮き彫りにする。

また、Anholtは日本の浮世絵師 歌川広重にもインスピレーション源を受けている。
版画という平面的な表現と西洋絵画の持つ遠近表現の間にある曖昧な中間領域を模索した作品は、画面を重ねていくことで奥行きが生まれている。

本展では個人主義と崇高といったロマン主義の理想を発展させながら、彼の初めて触れる日本文化が現代的視点から探求された。
