－幼少期や育った場所について教えてください。それらはどのようにしてあなたの作品に繋がっていきましたか？
私はオランダのアムステルダムで生まれましたが、幼少期はケニアで過ごしました。東アフリカにおけるこの最初の人格形成期が、制作に多大な影響を及ぼしたように思います。サハラ砂漠以南の強い日差し、きつい影、色彩……。
オランダで私の作品にインスピレーションを与えたのは、グラフィックデザイン、そしてPiet Mondrian、Gerrit Rietveld、De Stijlといった、原色や抽象表現を用いたことで知られるアーティストやデザイナーたちです。
－Please tell us about your childhood and homeland. What kind of effect did they have on your work?
I was born in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, but I spent my early childhood in Kenya. I believe spending my first formative childhood years in East Africa has had a big influence on my work. The strong sub-Saharan sunlight, the harsh shadows, the colors…….
As for the Netherlands, I think what inspired me in my work is the graphic design, artists and designers such as Piet Mondrian, Gerrit Rietveld, De Stijl movement, which are all known for the use of primary colors and abstractions.
－写真を撮り始めたきっかけについて教えてください。
父は写真と映像に関心があり、常に古いPENTAXのカメラとSuper 8のビデオカメラを持ち歩いていました。やがて私たちはケニアからオランダに戻り、私は何時間も家族のアルバム、つまりアフリカでのかつての生活の写真を眺めていました。まだとても近くに感じる、しかし何光年も離れた異世界のような……。写真とは魔法のようなものだと思いました。
初めはファッションデザインを2年間学びましたが、その傍らでモデル業を始め、数々の写真家と出会いました。そしてすぐに、自分はカメラの前ではなく後ろに立ちたいのだと気づいたのです。そこで大学で4年間写真を学び、写真を媒体に美術学修士号を取得しました。
写真家としての本格的なキャリアをスタートさせたのは、1997年に卒業してからのことです。
－What brought you to photography?
My father was interested in photography and film, he always carried an old PENTAX around and a Super 8 video camera. After we moved back to the Netherlands from Kenya, I could spend hours looking at our family albums; images of my former life in Africa; a parallel universe that still felt so close but was light years away……. Photography felt like magic.
At first, I studied fashion design for two years but once I started modelling as a side-job, I met many photographers. I quickly realized that I wanted to be behind the camera instead of in front of it. So, I studied photography for 4 years and then did a master in fine art, with photography as my medium.
When I graduated in 1997, I started my professional career as a photographer.
－日本の学生たちの瑞々しさを捉えた「At the River」シリーズは、あなたの作品の中でも特異な魅力を放っているように感じます。このシリーズについて教えてください。
とても自然な形で生まれたシリーズです。京都の桂川沿いを歩いていた時、修学旅行を楽しむ生徒たちが互いにスマートフォンで写真を撮り合っているところを見かけました。
彼らが交流する様子を愛おしく思います。ティーンエイジャーが楽しく過ごすその姿は、現代版の（スマートフォンが至るところに！）普遍的な光景と言えるでしょう。
－The ‘At the River’ series, which captures the vibrancy of Japanese students, seems to have a singular attraction among your works. Please tell us about this series.
It came about in a very spontaneous way; I was walking along the Katsura River in Kyoto when I saw all the schoolkids enjoying their school trip and taking pictures of each other along the river.
I love how they interact; teenagers having a joyous time, it’s a modern version (you see all the mobile phones!) of something that’s of all times.
